CCDD 021811—Evil Doppleganger

Classic Cool Card Design of the Day
What follows is a CCDD that was created before the feature transitioned from the Wizards Wiki to Goblin Artisans. It has been formatted to fit your screen.

2/18/2011 - When I shared Fleeting Distraction, I mentioned that it had inspired a black-red version of the card. In preparing this follow-up post, I determined that there was, in fact, nothing red about it: black already does all of the individual things this card is doing. I am pleased to introduce you to your Evil Doppleganger... in card form. You do not want to meet your evil doppleganger in person.

Fleeting Distraction was originally "copy, haste, sacrifice" and this was originally "copy, haste, sacrifice and sacrifice the copied creature." The added mechanic as well as the change in flavor makes it not at all blue and very much black. This nasty thing steals your face, violently betrays your friends and then fights you to the death.

This was 1BB, but for an effect that is basically "Choose a creature. It's controller sacrifices it at EOT" with upside, that was way too cheap. 3BB might be fair, but 4BB is safe and still very playable in and out of constructed. Imagine playing this after your opponent taps her Grave Titan.

An alternate solution to making it so expensive is to nerf it a bit. On the plus side, making the two cards kill each other personally is all-around awesome. The fight mechanic is a bit of a stretch in a black, but only the reciprocity is unprecedented. The 'downside' to this version is that you can now potentially copy a creature with higher toughness than power and keep it forever.
