CCDD 022014—Bed of Leeches

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/20/2014 - I was made to remember recently a card designed for M13GA that I was quite fond of, but that didn't make it into the final file for reasons other than design quality. It's not a strong card by any measure, but it is flavorful removal that gets the job done …for a ton of mana. And on very rare occasion, it will be better than Murder or Doom Blade.

That's exactly what I want out of a bad card.

  1. I like this a lot. You can always just stick it on some high-toughness enemy creature and use it as "1B: Gain 1 life".

  2. I designed this card.

I liked it, but it didn't quite play well - you had to keep the creature alive to repeat-activate it but that usually involved taking damage from it. It's fine to be weak, but it's not fine to have a quality against its purpose so that it doesn't do what it seems to say it does. There could have been an "Enchanted creature gets -2/-0" flavorfully tacked on to it with appropriate cost adjustment. Although that might make it wordy.

Maybe the numbers could have been different to make either the Drain Life mode or the extended torture mode a little more useful.

    1. Good point. Maybe change the ability to 1B: -1/-1 until EOT and you gain 1 life?

    2. I don't think that reads well. I do think a cost of just B to activate would put this in a better (still bad) place.
