CCDD 073114—Spawning Toad

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/31/2014 - Spawnwrithe definitely deserved to come first. It's more fun because it's more interactive. That said, if Pack Rats are okay to print, a card that's a compromise between the two might be promising too. Mostly though, I just wanted a creature that you could cast every turn.

  1. Make it an Ooze and I'll love it forever

  2. I want to try this at Uncommon only to realize it is totally ridiculous and move it back to Rare.

  3. By the way, I think the upkeep trigger is too feel bad if you draw a better card. (It is depressing to think: "Do I think I can do better than a Gray Ogre this turn? Probably not... [activate]" Is there any other "natural" time for this to trigger so that it feels like all upside?)

    1. I think I prefer that upkeep tension over making it activatable once per turn at sorcery speed.

    2. That certainly doesn't work because it let's you make infinite copies from one by using the ability on the new copies.

    3. Simple solution:
      {2}{G}, {T}: Spawn more overtoads.

  4. I like this a lot, especially how it could grow exponentially in theory but won't. (Kind of like real-life animals that way!)

The pedant in me demands "a token that's a copy" in the template.

  5. Riffing:

    Spawning Ooze 2G
    Creature -- Ooze (R)

4GG, Tap: Put into play two tokens that are copies of ~.
